Chapter ten

One way tickets

Ihad to think about Áinfean’s answer for a while. After all, I had to admit to myself that she was right in a way. If I was already cursed, there was nothing I could do about it. And after all, Áinfean had so far helped me get through the first dangers that we had mastered together.

Garek trudged silently along beside me, looking back every few steps. Apparently, he considered the empty corridor at our backs a greater threat than me. Of all things, the company of the grumpy dwarf did me a lot of good at the moment. It was a relief to walk next to someone who didn’t constantly harangue you, lecture you about your equipment, or try to stab you in the back with a dagger because of it.

So my companions trotted silently in front of me up the path. Only Armageddon and Octavianus, who were walking in front, were talking quietly. I hoped that their conversations helped them to be particularly vigilant.

“You don’t believe that, do you? They are talking about us,” Áinfean hissed at me.

“Uh, about us?”

“Who else would they be talking about? Do you think they’re talking about their great-aunt Clara, whom they couldn’t remember anyway?”

I cleared my throat. “No, it’s just that your wording struck me as odd.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

With a clearing of my throat, I covered the moment so as not to say anything wrong now.

“I can hear you thinking, remember? So what were you not going to say?”

“Ahem . . .”

“Stop clearing your throat, that habit already gave you such a stupid name. And. . . hang on!”

For a moment Áinfean remained silent. “There’s something!” she whispered, “I can feel it very clearly!”

“What is there and where?” Áinfean made me nervous.

“Are you talking to your sword again?” asked Garek.

“In front of us in the corridor. I don’t know what it is, but it’s dangerous!” hissed Áinfean.

“Stop!” I shouted to the others. “There’s something there!”

Octavianus, carrying the front torch, stopped and turned to me. “What’s wrong?”

“There’s something going on in front of us!”

Octavianus turned around and looked into the corridor. Armageddon had already gone a few steps further and peered ahead in his turn.

“There’s nothing here,” I heard Armageddon say. He walked on cautiously, always peering ahead.

“Yes, there must be!” I insisted.

“Let me guess, your sword whispered that to you, did it?” asked Octavianus.

Ignoring his undertone, I repeated myself. “Áinfean is sure there’s something dangerous ahead!”

“I don’t see anything,” Octavianus replied, but he sounded worried.

“I can’t see anything from here, but wait . . . uuggull!” Armageddon gurgled suddenly.

Octavianus wheeled around. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

But no answer came from Armageddon. The magician stood in a grotesque position in the middle of the corridor, as if he had run into an invisible wall and then was frozen in mid-motion. No, not frozen. His body twitched and vibrated. A muffled, desperate groan came from him, as if he were producing sounds without breathing.

Armageddon slightly injured by hidden entity, the system reported.
